  • New Boz Scaggs studio album, "SPEAK LOW," now available.  This is the second volume of Jazz standards recorded by Boz Scaggs.  Available on Vinyl and in CD format. Release date: October 28, 2008. Decca Records. [Reviews/Video]

  • ONE IMAGE comes repeatedly to mind when I think about SPEAK LOW:  Gil and I in a dark studio, he on piano and me on a microphone, a lamp between us. I remember an exchange we had about wanting the arrangements to give the impression of music "coming out of silence." There is an overwhelming sense of stillness in a lot of this work that comes, literally, out of our sitting there together, with the music.

We were on headphones and our engineer gave us a fantastic soundscape with the Steinway and my favorite vintage mic, a U47. Gil has an expression on the piano like Bill Evans - a light touch that suspends notes one at a time or in deft clusters like stars in the night sky. I have a quiet voice and sing "in" rather than "out," working the mic to shape the vocal. I improvise very little on the melody; rather, I try to coax nuance and expression out of timing and tone.

It started out with the  basics - finding the song and choosing a key - and proceeded with experiments in feel, rhythm, and temp. But it is the stillness we tried to preserve, a transcendent feeling of stopping time - doing nothing - and letting these great songs carry us along.
