1. We Were Always Sweethearts

WE WERE ALWAYS SWEETHEARTS
(B. Scaggs)

We were always sweethearts
Different in our ways
Together we spent happy hours
And oh, happy days
Laughing in the sunshine
And crying in the rain
Together we knew happy days
We never knew no pain

Cloudy day, sunny sunshine
Happy days will never be the same

I was her man
And she my queen
Together we knew happy days honestly
Lying in the grass
And laying on our butts

We were always different
Different in our ways
Together we knew happy hours
And oh, happy ways
Lying out together
And never mind the weather
Together we knew happy days
We never had it better, yeah

Cloudy days, sunny sunshine
Happy days will never be the same

No, no, no
Yeah,
Ah, get it

Oh, times came to be
So hard you'll see
Never, never know in stormy weather
Times came to be
So hard to be
Never, never knowing we're together, yeah

We were always sweethearts
Different in our ways
Together we spent happy hours
And oh, happy days
Laughing in the sunshine
And crying in the rain
Together we knew happy days
We never knew no pain, yeah

Cloudy days, sunny sunshine
Happy days will never be the same

Na na na na na na yeah...

2. Downright Women

DOWNRIGHT WOMEN
(B. Scaggs)

She bathes herself
In sweet perfume
She helps herself
To all the room she can muster
She's a flustered thing

Oh my, my,, my...
She's my baby
She's my baby, yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah

She wears her rouge
Like a summer day
She wears her perfume
Oh, what a way, yeah
She's a flustered thing

Oh my, my, my...
She's my baby
She's my baby
Yeah yeah yeah

She wears her rouge
Like a summer day, yeah
She wears her perfume
But it all goes away, yeah

I feel sorry
She could go so far
Through her weird desire

She's got everything
And what's in-between
She's my baby
She's my baby, yeah yeah yeah
Woo hoo hoooo

3. Painted Bells

PAINTED BELLS
(B. Scaggs)

Winding down the Drury Lane
I fall with the evening rain
My thoughts with the water flow
Like steam rising off the road

Passers-by watch their step
To see that they don't get wet
And I'll just sit beneath this tree
Let the drops fall all over me
And watch the city lights flick on

The crowds collide just out of my reach
The taxi's lights splash up and down the street
I sit and watch the faces go by
I don't wonder where to, or why

'Cause it's me, the rain, and my warm dark pain
Alone, at ease, and nowhere at all
My thoughts just drift on back to you
It seems you're here so it must be true
We never parted, you never went away

So I order up another glass
Not to let the moment pass
Turning around in love with you
Oh I know you loved me too
And it's always been this way

Here sitting in my wet cafe
I catch a spark across the way
A string of tiny painted bells
Seem to have a tale to tell

A string of tiny painted bells
On someone that I once knew well
Is all that's left
The rest's not true
I smile, I see it's really you
The rain will go
And you will too... away

And I order up another glass
Not to let the moment pass
Turning around in love with you
Oh, it got too hard to do
And it's always been this way
Yes, it's always been this way

4. Alone Alone

ALONE, ALONE
(Written and sung by David Brown)

The only song on the album apart from the instrumental at the end, which is not sung by Scaggs, is the countryish ‘Alone Alone’, sung by David Brown, the bass player (one of 3 bass playing David Browns in San Francisco), and it also features the pedal steel guitar of John McFee, who also graced Van Morrison’s ‘Tupelo Honey’ and ‘St. Dominic’s Preview’.

I found a friend who says he hasn't any fears
He has a brother who's been sailing here for years
But if I have this friend for long
He'll hear this sad, confusin' song
And look away from all he thinks he knows
And wonder where it goes
Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone

Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone

And I found a friend who says he's shedding no more tears
Got him a woman who will love him through the years
If I've ever known his dreams
Things are all the way they seem
He'll walk away from all his promises
And laugh about betrayal
Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone

Turn his head and look away
Alone. alone

And I found a friend who has not been here very long
He goes 'round and 'round and spins you out a song
He says his memory's to blame
When nothing ever sounds the same
Here I'm going inside the words, he said
And crawl back out the hole

Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone
Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone

And I found a friend who says he cannot sleep at night
He lies awake and balls his fists to beat the fright
He says it's hard to get ahead
And things are better done than said
It's a lonesome situation here
Hard and long and gone

Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone
Turn his head and look away
Alone, alone

And I found some friends who turn their heads and look away
("Man what's wrong with you")
With all their reasons sounding good for things they say
If I have these friends for long
I'd get so lost inside this song

I'd get away from what I'm leaning on
Go on and on and on

Turn my head and look away
Alone
Turn my head and look away
Alone, alone
Turn my head and look away
Alone, alone

5. Near You

NEAR YOU
(B. Scaggs)

I want to be near you
I want to hear what you have to say
As long as I'm near you
Nothing will seem to pass away

Long as I'm near you
Longing to hear you
Long as I'm near you

I want to believe you
When you say the things you do
And so I believe you
You make it all appear so true
Glad that I found you
It's good to be around you
Good to be near you

When it comes to making time
Little girl you sure made mine
You made my day
You made my way to stay

I want to be near you
You're my all you're my everything
As long as I'm near you
There's a song in my heart to sing
The song of your laughter
Is all that I'm after
I want to be near you

Love is such a happy song
And when love comes along
It's good to be alive
It's good that you arrived on time

I want to be near you
I want to be near you
I want to be near you

As long as I'm near you
As long as I'm near you
As long as I'm near you

I want to believe you
I want to believe you
I want to believe

And so I believe you
And so I believe you
And so I believe you

I want to believe you
I want to believe you
I want to believe

As long as I'm near you
As long as I'm near you
As long as I'm near

I want to believe you

6. I Will Forever Sing (The Blues)

I WILL FOREVER SING (THE BLUES)
(R.P. St. John)

I never dreamed
I never dreamed before I started
That I'd chosen such a hard, hard road to choose
Farewell, sweet dreams
But now it seems
That I will forever sing the blues
Hey that I will forever sing the blues

Hey, looking back
It could have been predicted
Yes, looking back
It could easily have been foretold

Oh, but we were blind
And who at that time
Who was worried about the winter and cold
Who was worried about the winter and the cold

Well excuse me if you catch me feeling sorry
If my smile gets hidden behind last night's headlines
Well it's not good news
But I sing the blues
Life keeps getting harder all the time
Yes, life keeps getting harder all the time
Yes, life keeps getting harder all the time

All the time, yeah yearh
All the time

Well, it just keeps on
It just keep on
All the time... all the time
Alright yeah yeah yeah
Alright yeah

7. Moments

MOMENTS
(B. Scaggs)

Was it for a moment's pleasure
That brought me to your door
Was it for your darkest treasure
Could I have loved you more

Did I take the time to tell you
I'd seen you once before
You were standing in my garden
And I was on the floor

Came around that evening
Came around that fall
My heart went out that evening
Never came back at all

And so I came to know you
As keeper of my heart
Saw me searchin', saw you
Showed me from the start

Time and again I've held you near me
I wonder if you've ever known
How I hold you near me
Is not exactly shown

I'm coming around to know you
I've come to find my place
Someone there to go to
It's come to be my fate

Like a fire holds its heating
Like the winter holds its cold
Like a question holds its answer
That's the way you hold me

I came around that evening
I came around that fall
My heart went out that evening
Never came back at all

Comin' around to know you
I've come to find my place

8. Hollywood Blues

HOLLYWOOD BLUES
(B. Scaggs)

Rich girl she got her bag
Poor girls got one too
My girls happy just doing her thing
She's doing what she wanna do

You can be
Anyone you wanna be
So why you wanna be
Someone else

Rich girl looks like a movie star queen
Other girls don't have a care
Now my baby looks like a somethin' too
She looks like she's sitting right there

You can be
Anyone you wanna be
So why you wanna be
Someone else

Ah, tell me now

Everybody takes little hints sometimes
Know there's nothing there to lose
Make darn sure it's your own thing baby
You'll end up with two left shoes

You can be
Anyone you wanna be
So why you wanna be
Someone else

I wanna know
If you can be
Anyone you wanna be
Why you got to be
Someone else

You can be
Anyone you wanna be
So why you got to be
Someone else

9. We Been Away

WE BEEN AWAY
(D. Brown)

We grew tired of the water
We grew sleepy from the heat of the day
You broke your promises, you said that we'd have fun
And all the rest, you sent me here to stay

We been away
We been away
We been away, yeah yeah
We been away

Painted silly, all red and black
She poured the whiskey down the sink
Caught our father cryin' now
We chased him up the wall
It never even bothered us to think

We been away
We been away
We been away, yeah yeah
We been away

We been away
We been away
We been away, yeah yeah
We been away

There's been hangin' in the kitchen
There's been talkin' 'bout things not to say
Goin' home now but that's no excuse
For anyone out there to want to stay

We been away
We been away
We been away, yeah yeah
We been away

We been away
We been away
We been away, yeah yeah
We been away
